Before beginning his collection of the fragments of the Greek historians (FGrHist), he set out his understanding of the development of Greek historiography, an analysis that has in turn influenced scholars of Roman historiography. Jacoby divided the historical writing of the Greeks into five sub-genres, arranged according to the order in which he believed they developed.
