About two weeks after that I stepped in a hole and got a punji stake through the knee. LZ English was a pretty well-known location. It wasn't particularly impressive or well fortified in the way that, say, Cam Ranh Bay was, but it was situated in the midst of heavy enemy concentrations and was famous for some pretty intensive fighting. I'd never been there, but I knew the names of the surrounding areas: the An Lao Valley to the north, the Tiger Mountains to the south. And I knew it was supposed to be a pretty remote place. When I left the airstrip that day, the chopper took me to Tuy Hoa—another coastal town, at the edge of Phu Yen Province— 41 42 STEALTH PATROL where we met up with Pipkin and made arrangements to catch a plane from there on up to LZ English.

So just before dark we started back to the mountain to look for a place to set up. We walked for about two hundred yards or so before selecting a spot just up the foot of the mountain and alongside a footpath that wound its way through the trees and down into the valley. Pfister and I discussed it, and we both felt like it was the most likely place for the VC to try and access the camp: the dirt was worn clean, the limbs had been cleared—so apparently somebody had been using it—and it offered a better view of the valley and the perimeter down below.
