Running a couple of triple rigs — two or three treble hooks rigged tandem-style, each with a live bait (sometimes topped off with a colored plastic skirt) — often brought up the big smoker mackerel, the thirty- to forty-pound shimmering torpedoes that would peel off 200 yards of line if the fisherman was caught flat-footed — or even if he wasn’t. “It sure gets the angler more involved,” Ernie chuckled. ” We talked more about the fall fishing season on Hatteras. I wanted to hear Ernie on the season down here that was so wonderfully mythologized for me almost a half century ago at the Jersey Shore by those old-timers making plans to head down to Hatteras for striper and drum just as the tourists were packing up and the fishing was picking up.

In fact, if you were good enough, you could cast from the Manasquan side of the Manasquan Inlet and land your sinker in Point Pleasant Beach. I saw it done once. Bill had that nice Central Jersey accent, somewhere between the Philly patois and the New Joisey cabbie-speak, which began thirty miles to the north of where we grew up. Then he said my name to himself, ruminating. Now his synapses were firing. ” he asked. “Carlson’s Corner,” I said. “My parents owned it. ” He smiled, and we figured out that I had probably served him coffee and cooked him a hamburger forty-plus years ago.

The stripers were usually in the shallow, choppy side of the inlets — that would be the southern or Ocracoke Island side of Hatteras Inlet — and getting a thirty-seven-foot boat over to them, even if it drew only two-anda-half feet of water, could be a tricky business. The secret was to hold the boat just outside the chop and cast into it using big surf rods for distance. For the deeper fish, it was deep-jigging bucktails. But if the fish were working the surface, artificials of choice included surface plugs like Atom Poppers or Cordell Pencil Poppers or metal spoons or Hopkinses.
