When i used to be getting my clinical and psychiatric education within the overdue Nineteen Fifties and early Sixties, the version of standard and deviant adolescent improvement was once the white male. This used to be no longer dazzling, considering for each scientific or mental research of adolescent women performed prior to now 2 a long time, there have been seven reviews on adolescent men. This large discrepancy in real medical and learn information among female and male kids resulted in the next myths: (1) woman teens are assorted purely biologically from their male friends; they've got comparable psychosocial difficulties; (2) Adolescent women haven't been studied simply because their difficulties aren't worthy learning; (3) learning adolescent women may be harmful to both the sufferer or therapist, or to either. in terms of the 3rd fable, male psychotherapists have been advised that they need to no longer deal with lady adolescent sufferers simply because erotic inter play may perhaps increase, which might be destructive to the sufferer and consistent with haps very unlikely to solve. Many clinics within the usa had a rule that younger adolescent women couldn't be handled via male therapists. It was once therefore tough for ladies to acquire treatment-for so much therapists have been men. It additionally intensified the sentiments between mom and dad, academics, v vi Foreword group leaders, and the women themselves that maybe woman youngsters weren't worthy treating.

An adolescent is expected to find friends and activities outside of her family. She is also expected to find a few close friends to confide in and to share less of her confidences with her parents. In school her teachers expect her to think abstractly and reason out problems and find comparisons. She can no longer achieve by rote memory alone. Some adolescents, sensing that they can never make these transitions without considerable help, become depressed and sometimes seriously suicidal. Others regress and develop behavior problems, but these problems are usually temper tantrums in the home and not acting out in the community with peers.

These factors-tal her strong impulses and relatively weak ego; (b) her probable lack of abstract thinking; and (c) the likelihood that her parents have retained some ability to influence her-encourage a treatment approach for the younger girl that includes more external structuring. Listening in an interested manner to what the girl has to say-for she loves attention-is a good way to start the therapeutic process. Not only does the adolescent love attention, but prior to coming to psychotherapy she has probably been in many arguments with her parents and she will very likely enjoy having an adult listen to her side of the story without shouting at her, criticizing her, or thinking that she is bad.

Parents often feel relieved that psychotherapy has started and that they are no longer solely responsible for their daughter's well-being. Their attitude towards their daughter may soften, becoming less hostile and more hopeful. The therapist will want to look on this during the evaluation process because such a change in the parents' attitude towards their daughter increases the likelihood that therapy will continue and will be successful. CHAPTER 3 Depressed Girls in the Earlier Phase of Adolescence In the case of Christy, which follows, we find a younger adolescent girl was depressed.
