13 Eating disorders, individually, socially and historically, could be interpreted as indicating quite dramatic changes in preferences, thereby lying outside the realm of economics, if not political economy, since orthodox economics axiomatically takes 32 THE POLITICAL ECONOMY OF EATING DISORDERS preferences as both fixed and exogenously given. Elsewhere (Fine, 1995b, 1997b, 1998b), attempts by neoclassical economists such as Gary Becker to endogenise preferences have been criticised for perceiving deviancy in consumption, such as addiction, as the ‘rational’ strategic response to consumption possibilities over time.

You do not regulate or educate consumers not to suffer from eating disorders any more than offering leaflets informing the public on how not to be insane! The understanding and treatment of eating disorders is based upon the consumer being treated as being both medically and mentally ill. This chapter is concerned with eating disorders, some of the other issues being taken up in other chapters. This is not intended to imply an acceptance of the traditional distinction between the categories of eating problems outlined above.

This implies, as argued in the following section, that eating disorders should be understood not simply as a disorder of the individual psyche but as the particular forms assumed by the socially generated pressures both to eat and to diet. The remainder of this chapter is concerned to establish the economic basis for these pressures and why it is that both can intensify despite their apparent inconsistency. This involves asking why women should be particularly vulnerable to the pressures concerned, why thinness should have increasingly become the ideal norm for body image, and why food should, as it were, have become the object of stress management or dysfunction.
